Dr. Sherket B. Peterson is committed to the educational, professional and personal development of exceptional students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic (HURE) backgrounds. The Sherket B. Peterson Scholarship provides financial aid in the form of a scholarship to further the education of HURE students who are interested in pursuing a career in health. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies to be eligible for the award. The scholarship recognizes outstanding, full-time HURE students who have participated in the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and who demonstrate a drive to succeed in their pursuit of a health career, leadership and a passion to create change in their community.

Dr. Sherket B. Peterson Scholarship for Research and Innovation

“The costs associated with health professions education pose a considerable barrier for many [students from historically underrepresented and marginalized groups], whose economic resources are, on average, more limited than their … counterparts.” Despite their passion, students from these communities may be discouraged from pursuing a career in the health professions when faced with the prospect of high debt. Sherket B. Peterson, Ph.D., is committed to the educational, professional and personal development of exceptional students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. With the support of the ADEAGies Foundation and the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), the Dr. Sherket B. Peterson Scholarship for Research and Innovation provides financial aid in the form of a scholarship and mentorship to further the advancement of historically underrepresented students interested in pursuing careers in health care.
 
The scholarship recognizes outstanding, full-time underrepresented students who have participated in SHPEP and demonstrate three traits:
 
  1. Drive to succeed in their pursuit of health care careers in a field that will enhance health research or innovation
  2. Leadership and
  3. Passion for creating change in their communities.
 
Each awardee will receive $3,000 and one year of mentorship from Dr. Peterson.
